(I’m more familiar with him as a smaller-scale singer. Still, Fischer-Dieskau recorded Rigoletto, so…)

A pity. She was singing Luisa in Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery at Barenboim’s Berlin Easter Festival. Stepped in at short notice to replace Anna Netrenko with Barenboim and the orchestra in a Verdi concert. We were at the second performance on Saturday and she was magnificent singing arias from Rigoletto and La Traviata rather than the Netrebko repertoire of Nabucco, Aida and Forza. Netrebko had sung Luisa in Betrothal at the Maryinsky some 25 years ago – preserved on dvd
