Austrian woman, 24, wins Vienna Philharmonic vacancy

The audition for a first violin seat at the Vienna State Opera was won this morning by Lara Kusztrich, a local candidate. She will automatically play in Vienna Philharmonic concerts but will only be considered for membership after a long probation.

Vienna born, she studied with professors Dora Schwarzberg and Lieke te Winkel at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

  • the orchestra of the State Opera is NOT the same orchestra of the Vienna Philharmonic. Both are separate entities. Most members of the State Opera orchestra are members of the Vienna Philharmonic; but being in the orchestra is not an automatic membership of the Philharmonic. Please, let’s keep the facts straight, unless I’ve erred…

    • I think what Norman is saying is that Staatsoper players can play Philharmonic concerts from the start (effectively as extras), but only get invited to become members after a few years.

    • It is extremely rare for anyone who passes the trial year in the opera orchestra not to eventually be made a member of the Vienna Philharmonic. The usual waiting period for tenure into the Philharmonic is three years.

    • You have ‘erred’. The word automatic is not mentioned in the article in the way you suggest. It is ,due quite clear that membership of the VPO is not automatic and may only be granted, if it is granted, after a long probation.

  • I’d be curious to know what percent of hires in the past 5 or 10 years have been women. I could be wrong, but it seems like they’re making more than a token effort these days. That wasn’t the case, of course, in the first decade after they started allowing women in the ensemble.

  • Just another example of what happens when women abandon their real roles which are: Kinder, Küche, Kirche.

Kaiser Wilhelm II himself predicted this. Or was it the Kaiserin Augusta Victoria? Was he/she really mad or just prescient? Or was it Lang Lang?

No wonder the world is going to hell (and yes, this is SARCASM.) ☺
