Martha Argerich extends Hamburg festival with ex-husband Dutoit
mainThe veteran pianist will hold a second round of her Hamburg festival this summer.
It has been extended from eight days to eleven and will feature the sidelined conductor Charles Dutoit.
Other artists appearing are: Khatia Buniatishvili, Maria João Pires, Renaud Capuçon, Mischa Maisky, Stephen Kovacevich, Dong Hyek Lim, Guy Braunstein, Sylvain Cambreling, Nicholas Angelich, Edgar Moreau and Renaud Capuçon.
Nice to see Argerich showing support for her ex-husband. And what a great line-up of talent at that festival!
Her loyalty is atypical and to be commended.
Mostly very impressive line up of soloists. What happened to the retirement of the great Maria João Pires?
Petros, Good question. I gather that “retirement” means different things to different people. Pires is an exceptional pianist.
Maria Joao Pires is very active, she plays solo recitals in Spain in main towns and she has even created her own festival. There is a world outside of the main circuits. She did not retire at all it was just an excuse to leave Askonas Holt.
I got the impression she was only going to stop the touring/ travelling thing, not stop performing altogether.
there will be quite a few other musicians at the festival 😉
Good for Martha Argerich ! Not just a great musician, but a loyal friend not prepared to bow to the latest PC fad.
I have great admiration for Argerich but I think she is starting to lose her judgement in her advancing years. Two names immediately jump out from that lineup: Buniatishvili (!) and her ex.
