Covent Garden’s supersub saves Stuttgart’s Lohengrin
mainThe young Irish soprano Jennifer Davis, who leaped in for Kristine Opolais as Elsa in Covent Garden’s Lohengrin earlier this year, is on a flight to Stuttgart to repeat the role tomorrow.
She replaces the unwell Simone Schneider.
Good for her. She is a lovely person.
Perhaps. But will anyone remember her, her voice, her art in a few? I know, I know, no one has a crystal ball.
Perhaps, but we will remember truly unpleasant and nasty posts. Lucky you.
Good start, guys. Keep it up!
Hope it’s a better production than the tired 70’s retread ROH served up. Ms Davis made that show bearable and not just because she subbed for a sub par superstar.
The Lohengrin I recently saw at the ROH was a new production as far as I’m aware.
Striking to look at on its own terms but usually at a tangent to the drama, and some portentous references to the NAZI period.
I’ve certainly seen worse, but Lohengrin isn’t my favourite Wagner opera in any case.
The key ones for me, are Mastersingers and Parsifal as there’s less treading water in terms of musical invention.
