It’s Tristan und Isolde tomorrow at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.

At 75, Daniel Barenboim will finally conduct an opera in the town where he was born.

The renowned ballerina Olga Iskanderova has been run over and killed by two car racers oin St Petersburg’s main avenue.

Olga, who was 74, was one of the most respected teachers at the Mariinsky for the past 20 years.

Two young men have been arrested.

After a performance of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, which features recurring flute solos, music director Andris Nelsons asked Elizabeth Rowe to stand. Orchestra members who solo during a symphony are frequently asked to take a bow after the performance, but Sunday afternoon’s rollicking applause for Rowe may have also signaled coded support for her unprecedented legal fight for equal pay.

The boisterous applause for Rowe onstage stands in contrast with the quiet public reaction from her fellow musicians offstage. Comments by members of the orchestra, and by some staff members, all sounded very much like “no comment.” “Good for Liz” is about the only non-generic response given during multiple conversations about the matter.

The death has been announced of Albert Hofmann, Moscow’s foremost flute teacher and performer. He was 80.

Named principal flute of the Moscow Philharmonic Society in 1958, he was a favourite of Richter and Oistrakh, with whom he made many chamber recordings. He was named People’s Artist of Russia in 1989 and appointed professor at the Gnessin Institute. He had many foreign students.

This is the first-round list for the second Antal Dorati Conducting Competition in Budapest.

At this stage of the competition, there should not be so extreme a gender imbalance.
