This is the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester playing ‘The Robots are Coming!’ by Steve Pickett at a young people’s concert.

A sign of the times? The percussion of the future?

  • Patrick says:

Certainly the perfect instrument to perform a work titled “The Robots are Coming”. Much else, no.

  • John Borstlap says:

Apparently an educational project to inform youth about what a symphony orchestra is not, and what classical music is not.

  • Robert Holmén says:

The unimpressive visuals of automated percussion are probably why they added light flashes to let you know something was happening.

I don’t think will ever compete with the theatricality of a human drummer swinging away at some hide.

Mechanical percussion has been around on band organs for about 200 years now, if it hasn’t caught on yet…
