The Passionstheater at Oberammergau is staging Wagner next summer, apparently for the first time.

The Flying Dutchman will be conducted by the Latvian Ainars Rubikis and directed by Christian Stückl.

Orchestra is being imported from Munich. The chorus is local.

I might be happier about the competition if I didn’t fear that Stückl will be just as destructively revisionist in his staging.

It’s hardly a ‘local competitor’ the distance from Bayreuth to Oberammergau is 322 kilometers which is about a 3 hour drive. There’s a Munich Opera Festival in July too.
