press release:

The Royal College of Music (RCM) has today announced the appointment of globally renowned violinist MaximVengerov as Polonsky Visiting Professor of Violin.

Throughout his 40 year career as both a violinist and conductor, Vengerov has appeared with the world’s finest orchestras and conductors and given solo recitals at major concert halls and festivals around the globe. His extensive Grammy Award winning recording output has positioned Vengerov as one of the most prolific and influential musicians of all time.

Maxim Vengerov said: ‘I am thrilled to be joining the Royal College of Music as Polonsky Visiting Professor of Violin and very much look forward to working with the RCM’s talented students. Encouraging new generations of musicians is one my greatest passions and I am very pleased to be able to help shape the future careers of violinists at one of the world’s leading music conservatoires.’

Vengerov will visit the RCM at least three times a year, working with students through regular masterclasses and individual tuition.

Wow !!! at least 3 times a year , be still my beatng heart !
RCM should be embarrassed by this bs pretence to teaching but it ain’t ,Imagine master classes , private teaching , all in three visiting days and a star is born.

  • Bruce says:

    (a) Three times a year for how long?
    (b) Right time, right place, right student/teacher combination, and lightning can strike. I have been to master classes — with people who were renowned teachers and people who were not — where the teacher said one thing that changed my whole approach to making music, and ended up being as important to the rest of my musical life as the “fix that A-flat/ the E is a little sharp” approach of my regular teacher. (Said teacher was, to be fair, trying to teach me to listen carefully to every note; that is also important.)
    (c) This is not exactly deceptive marketing. Presumably this announcement will not lead anyone to enroll at the RCM expecting weekly lessons (scales, etudes) with Vengerov.

It could be a great experience for some, and for the rest — well, hopefully they will have a regular teacher who will be good for them, and 3 times a year they’ll have a class or two where they get no benefit but the ability to put his name on their résumé. Great potential gain, small potential loss.

  • MacroV says:

40-year career? Vengerov is only 42. I know he’s been dazzling audiences for years, but I don’t think his diaper period really counts as “career.”

  • Paul Unger says:

Wish I could go back to school. I love Vengerov!

  • Q says:

He is also the 2017 Artist-in-Residence for the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (with Music Director Alondra de la Parra), performing concerti, solo recitals and masterclasses.

  • music_montreal says:

ok. so jaap schroeder used to be a visiting faculty at my school (yale) twice a year,
for a week at a time. it was simply awesome. the point of visiting faculty is to enhance/augment/add to the curriculum of great schools. music students do not need your jealousy or cynicism, milka and all.

You’re all so all knowing and have the gift of foresight.
Wasted just sending comments to Slippeddisc
    What happened to waiting?

    • ANDY LIM says:

Experience in similar cases and witnessing every time again and again the failing of hoped-for results by these kind of Guest Professorships instead of the gift of foresight happened to make comments not a wast. Waiting for mentioning these justified critical remarks is certainly not needed, maybe unless for Godot. The teacher of Mr. V. showed the lucrative playing rules of the Worldwide Travelling Multiple Professorship Game, with the difference that Mr. V. is obviously not as talented or successful in the game as Mr. Bron. The only suggested by STWEART waiting issue could be waiting for the announcement of a third London Guest Professorship of the Guildhall School?

  • JohnC says:

He left the Royal Academy of Music??? He was a visiting professor there for many years.

  • ADAMRAM says:

JOHNC, I wanted to find out the same thing. Is Vengerov still a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music or has he left? It’s difficult not to notice how much staff has left the institution lately! Rather odd!
