Tchaikovsky piano finalists in Toronto shootout
mainLukas Geniusas (2nd place) and Lucas Debargue (fourth) played the same venue this weekend.
Who won?
Mike Vincent says Toronto did: The point is not the competition itself (musicians are not racehorses, after all), but to compare and contrast the different approaches that make each pianist’s artistry unique.

How blessed these young artists are to get to know each other, for they will be following each other throughout their careers. Similar to the tennis pros, I think they might all be friends and will get to know each other, respect each other, and perhaps do some four-hand concerts together in their futures (or two-piano concerti?) It’s all about friendships and sharing music.
A lovely sentiment, Jeffrey. It brings to mind that Solomon, Moiseiwitsch and Hess used to play bridge together. Of course, you all need to stay long enough in one place to do that — much rarer in these days than it was then.
The GENIoUS deBARgue Duo, sponsored by Apple perhaps?
Yes, it’s a shame to see this particular concert framed this way. Mike Vincent did not use the word “won,” after all, as NL suggests he did.
Unfortunately Vincent repeats the canard that “Debargue scandalously only made a 4th place showing at the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition.” There was no scandal, nor is there any shame whatsoever in placing 4th, as jurors for that competition have repeatedly said on this blog. Simply making the finals in such a competition is a huge honor.
Genusias is a good pianist but he bores me. He plays well but that’s all ! Debargue is a real genius. It’s playing exhilarates me !
