What a waste of good money …….
^ what a waste of good air.
^What a waste.
Yeah – it’s terrible when a government actually gives money to an orchestra. Consider yourselves fortunate that you’re not here in the US.
So many arts organizations across Canada robbed to feed the debt-riddled TSO, it’s mediocre chief conductor, and its philandering conman CEO. Tragic. At least all that cash didn’t just stay in Ottawa, where it could have been dumped into the National Arts Centre feed trough for its fatted bureaucrats and lacklustre little orchestra.
The NAC has a separate (and very substantial) allotment to renovate its facade and interior.
Its orchestra is just fine, thank you, and also attracts a wonderful array of visiting artists, both players and conductors. Its music education initiatives are stellar.
The house also programmes probably the best season of dance, year after year, of any house in the world, including commissions and co-commissions. It is the envy of other cities, and brings companies from throughout the world to perform in ballet, modern dance and modern ballet, contemporary, avant-garde and some standalone forms.
And its theatre departments, in both English and French, present works from across the country and around the world.
All disciplines do extensive outreach work.
So stuff your mean and malicious cavilling. You clearly know nothing about it.
And how does the NAC kool-aid taste, CDH?
Oh well! you’ve gone and won THAT argument. The ol’ “kool-aid” accusation, everyone can stop arguing, you’ve demonstrated your intellectual superiority.
Then I’ll cut and paste what I’ve already written on this site.
“it’s impossible to enjoy reading how Canadian tax dollars are lavished on this merely adequate orchestra, at the expense of countless other orchestras across the country, all struggling to serve their communities. The inequity is as appalling as the centre’s own self-serving hype. Best, perhaps, not to brag when the money that paid for the “accomplishments” robbed so many others and disallowed so much good work in Canada. It’s actually shameful to read”. – See more at: https://slippedisc.com/2013/10/just-in-ottawa-replaces-pinky-with-a-brit/#comments
If they are spending that much on TSO, I wonder how much Montreal is getting?
The only worth while Toronto musical group is – Opera Atelier – you learn in one
night what takes years for other musical groups . Most Canadians are too dumb
to notice what a rarity they have in Atelier and support the dreary TSO and various
other run of the mill groups .
All these ridiculous cynics here with nothing better to winge. The Toronto Symphony is fortunate to have such financial backing- if only London orchestras were in such a luxurious position. In Trudeau- Canada are also lucky to have such a young, charismatic and handsome PM.
You are quite correct in observing that the TSO is fortunate –perhaps the London
orchestras are not in such a luxurious position due to a more insightful populace than
the Canadian yokels .
