And the most famous living Belgian is…
mainThe 2016 Klara Carrièreprijs for being Belgian and internationally recognised has gone to the early music violinist and conductor Sigiswald Kuijken.
The annual prize has been running since 2001. Can’t imagine why they need it.
Many congratulations to Sigiswald. He has indeed been one of Belgium’s greatest musical exports for many years – and there can be few families who have produced three extraordinary brothers who have each ploughed such significant international musical careers as have Sigiswald, Bart and Wieland.
SD readers will hopefully reveal a few more similarly talented musical families, but meanwhile, bravo the Kuijkens, and bravo Sigiswald.
Sigiswald is a great musician but the price doesn’t mean that he’s the greatest living Belgian. Klara is the Flemish classical radio. Carriereprijs means a price for his whole career. Previous laureates like René Jacobs and Philippe Herreweghe are also still active and still great performers.
The price is also a political sign. Recently all subsidies of Kuijkens’ ensemble La Petite Bande are quit by the government.
