La Marsellaise as it ought to be sung
mainThere have been many worthy attempts at singing the anthem this week in solidarity with French suffering.
Most have drifted far from the score. This recording by the great tenor Georges Thill (1897-1984) is about as accurate as it gets – every note in place, every syllable pronounced, even the second verse rendered in full.
Liberté, liberté, cherie!

a great rendition, indeed!
For sheer emotion, it has to be the version from Casablanca.
How about Mireille Mathieu’s fervent rendition:

I was going to suggest Mireille Mathieu as well. Here’s another version of hers with cleaner audio:

If you watched the football the other night and you saw the way that was being sung, and with us Brits attempting as well, well … it was terribly moving.
