Diana Damrau has pulled out of San Francisco’s Lucia di Lammermoor. She has been told to observe complete voice rest for the next six weeks.

Anja Harteros is out of Munich’s Ariadne auf Naxos. It’s being said she doesn’t fancy the role any more.

Damrau is replaced by Nadine Sierra, Harteros by Amber Wagner, both US sopranos.

UPDATE: Statement by Damrau: ‘I am deeply sorry for all of those who had looked forward to my performances in San Francisco and I ask for your understanding. After 15 years of performing with little or no time for substantial rest and recuperation, along with the demands that come with a beautiful, young family, my body has reached the point when it is now ‘insisting’ that I pause for a short time. … The issue is in no way vocal, but one of exhaustion that the doctors tell me ten weeks of rest will without question fix.’

What does the passport of the singers in question, those who cancel and those who jump in, have any relevance in reporting the story?
The obsession of the editor of this blog with nationalities is worrisome. It’s antagonistic to the spirit of music. It’s anti-musical.

Yes such a slant very rude indeed.

There should be no complaints in Munich; Wagner sings a fine Ariadne.
