Just in: Stage directors form a trade union
mainLeading figures in British theatre have announced the formation of Stage Directors UK, a trade group aimed at protecting directors rights and increasing their fees. They speak of ‘an increasing sense of anger and frustration’ at their lack of representation and appreciation.
The group is led by Matthew Warchus, incoming head of the Old Vic, together with Marianne Elliott, Vicky Featherstone and Jeremy Herrin. Other founders include Ian Rickson, Sophie Austin, Howard Davies, Jonathan Butterell, Jemma Gross, Thomas Hescott and James Macdonald.
Several have worked in opera. They welcome more members from the opera sector.
Membership is free until January to those who fill out the survey on stagedirectorsuk.com.

And what is the view of the long established Director’s Guild, anyone know?
