Friends report the death of Ronald Sipes, former principal oboe of the New World Symphony and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon of Valladolid, Spain.

He was recovering from a stroke suffered five years ago when, on New Year’s Day, his life was ended by a second cerebral incident.

  1. Jeff Rathbun says:

Ron was a great oboist and person. He studied with the legendary Marc Lifschey out in California. I remember Ron showing me one of his oboe parts, an orchestral excerpt (I believe it was “Romeo Alone” from Berlioz’ Romeo and Juliet), and I was amazed at all of the detailed markings and performance suggestions that he had written in. He will be missed.

A wonderful artist and colleague…we made music together alas not frequently enough. We shall all miss him.
