The pianist, composer and educator Geri Allen died yesterday in Philadelphia of cancer.

Her work, crossing many genres and instruments, earned her a Guggenheim fellowship and international recognition.

Her music speaks for itself.

A terrible loss. She graced our stage at the Maverick Concerts once, which was not nearly enough.

I am really sad about Geri Allen’s demise. I heard her with Betty Carter and I will never forget her solo performance in Groningen (Netherlands) on May 24,2014.
