The Minnesota conductor was today named Honorary Conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, where he has been principal guest for three years.

‘I am really happy to continue my involvement with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and to be connected to this wonderful country,’ said Osmo Vänskä.

Vänskä was the chief conductor in Iceland for three years in the 90s, so I would see it as a continuing involvement with the orchestra rather than them tightening their grip, as you put it. I was lucky enough to be playing with them last week, and Vänskä led unforgettable performances of Sibelius, Beethoven and Aho. There’s clearly a lot of mutual respect.

Iceland tightens grip on Osma Vänskä? He hardly sounds coerced. Get a grip, Norman.
