Disastrous versions of national anthems are a great source of humour, this one more minimalist than most. Here’s one of my favourites: New Zealander Ricky May singing the Australian anthem at a South Australian football league grand final. We already knew they hate us, but

I sang the anthems at the first international game at Wembley. I feel pretty bad for her as it seems the production team were more interested in the staging (the podium, the dress etc) than ensuring she was secure. When I did them, I made sure I had speakers on the pitch facing me as the drum role in the stadium is virtually inaudible with all the fans making noise! Poor girl!
How was she to know when to start? The singer couldn’t see the conductor plus there was just a drum roll and no way of knowing what key she was supposed to sing in. Even the crowd didn’t fully start until gracious. Maybe there was supposed to be an intro but the crowd started singing.
When it – er – starts if all else has failed, or join in at a suitable time on the beat at the start of a sentence, like the second line ‘Long live our noble Queen’, and it would have all been a bit less obvious. Even at ‘Send her victorious’. Lack of experience and confidence. In any case, why they need any celebrity to sing that anyhow when they know the fans are quite capable of singing it, beats me.
That’s why it’s called a FACup (say it out loud without spelling the first two letters).
Missing the start may seem bad but at least she was more or less in time when she joined in. The singers and band were about 3 bars apart on ‘Abide With Me’.
I agree with Soraya and feel for her having done the gig. The track is awful and you get no cue or key prompt. I have always been lucky at the UK stadiums as had fold back monitors in front of me, so could here – just. This singer clearly has in-ear monitors. These are really unreliable as when the ariel touches your skin they cut out for long periods of time. This happened to me at the Amsterdam Arena many years ago. I was lucky-ish as it wasn’t the anthem that time so I had a song intro to realise and take the monitor out. Far from ideal. Totally not her fault.

Did she get paid?
Oh, yes, Rosanne, big time with a cut for the agent!
What is the FA Cup? Every one is all dressed up, even one of the royal family guys is there. It seems important.
