He’s only conducted the orchestra once, last November ? The nomination feels odd, as if they’d gotten turned down by other conductors. Has Sokhiev signed on with the Suisse Romande band ?
Sokhiev is far above the level of Luxembourg, or Suisse Romande. Shall I remind you he is one of the very few conductors alongside the likes of Nézet-Séguin, Thielemann, Dudamel, Barenboim, who are invited to conduct the Berliner Philharmoniker every single year ? You should also look into the other orchestras which invite him regularly.
Besides, Sokhiev has stated he is very happy being a guest conductor these days, not being tied down to any one place.
The orchestra he might very well become MD of in the future is the NHKSO, after Luisi finishes his tenure there
Well he whiffed out on the Munich Phil, Staatskapelle Dresden, Santa Cecilia, so now he may have to look further down the pecking order. No reason to believe he is in fact happy just hopping around guest conducting. Another possibility is Opéra de Paris.
He may be well regarded as a conductor, but he hasn’t really covered himself in glory running a company.
He’s incredibly talented, good for him!!
