Franz Welser-Möst has pulled out of the opening of the new Magic Flute, directed by Barbora Horakova, at the end of this month.

A statement from Staatsoper director Bogdan Roscic reads: ‘After successful immunotherapy, unexpected side effects occurred that made it impossible for him to participate. I know how painful it is for him not to be able to realize these ideas himself; the team at the State Opera feels the same way.’

Welser-Möst, a former director of the Staatsoper, will be replaced by Bertrand de Billy.

    Presumably no VPO Ball either…

    wish him better.

  • Guest Conductor says:

Wishing him the best of health. These news reports are not encouraging.

Yes, I’m very worried indeed as by now the cancer should be in remission. It seems to have been around so long now.

The public statements indicate that the treatments were successful, but the side effects from the treatment are the issue. Not much info, but Franz is entitled to his privacy.

Conducting can be exhausting particularly when the person is less than 100%.
We should know more about his schedule at the end of next month. In March, he is scheduled to conduct 3 programs in Cleveland plus 2 at Carnegie Hall. Cleveland management may need a backup plan, but rightfully they’re not ready to say.
