The Tiktok organist has announced ‘some personal news’ between very dark borders:

Comments

  • Organ says:

    What a load of ykw!

  • Organ says:

I wanted to hear this ballyhooed woman a few months ago in Karlsruhe but her program was such a (hybrid crossover arranged) mess that it would have been a waste of time.

    There are DOZENS of organists.

    • Dave G says:

Ms Lapwood’s personal life is a matter of indifference to me but it is hard to think of any other organist who does so much to raise the profile of the instrument among younger people, particularly young women. I’m not always keen on what she plays (the same goes for Jonathan Scott) but if it encourages young folk to discover the organ and understand that organs do not need to be associated with churches and religious music I say good for her.

      • Glenda says:

Yes, this is the myth that is pushed, but I see little evidence. How would we know that she has “raised the profile” among this or that demographic? Just by having a following on an app devoted to disposable videos of 15 seconds or less? So what? It’s only because classical music industry is so desperate, that anyone who has a “following” gets lauded as though they’re doing the work of God and the UN combined. The only profile she has raised is her own.

  • Glenda says:

Root position arrangements of Hans Zimmer, a big fat phony look-at-me grin and teenage girlish antics on stage would drive any sensible man away.

  • Del-boy says:

If she brings the younger generation to good music then that is to be welcomed, BUT – she really does need to start playing some serious heavyweight repertoire. Gurning for the camera is fine and I commend her achievement in getting a public profile, but its coming time to deliver.

A good recording on a fine instrument of some powerful large scale works would do no-harm at-all.

Plinky plonk music only takes you so far, and as an (appalling) organist myself, the whole attraction is that endless horizon and palette.

The much-missed John Scott proves the case in point.

Jaw dropping stuff, especially the last 5 minutes.

    • Glenda says:

Of course, but she has no remote ability to play any of that music. She literally played the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria as a solo work on her LA Phil debut recital. From the score. She doesn’t belong on stage.

She’s coasting on PR. If she were able to play real music we would know by now. As it is, she must be at her absolute wits end to fulfill even the dates she has. Literally any undergrad organ student has a better repertoire.

  • Barney says:

We should at least be thankful that she didn’t treat us to a video of their last farewell.

  • Another keyboard person says:

‘disengaged’ is a term used for couplers, not couples, isn’t it?

  • zandonai says:

if you think she’s bad, check out Latry’s organ playing at the Notre Dame reopening it was a hot mess.

    • Glenda says:

Both are totally overrated, and yes, it was a shitshow of pseudo-intellectual wannabe-Cochereau fake-Messiaen nothing burger “improvisation”. The man looks like a Paris cafe waiter and plays like a grad student with a narcissism problem.

  • Paul Brownsey says:

There is such a vast gap between this statement and anything I would feel after such a break-up. Well, you say, perhaps that merely says something unflattering about me. Alternatively, perhaps the devising of such statements has nothing to do with reality.

  • Save the MET says:

Not sure who advised her, but unless she’s inviting suitors, this was wholly unecessary.

  • Anthony Sayer says:

I can’t stick these insincere, saccharin declarations. So she’s off to find another organ. Good luck.
As for a woman ‘raising the organ’s profile’, what about Jane Parker-Smith, to name just one? She played serious rep, too.
