There’s a mountain of forgotten music waiting to be mined but I’m less confident of the opera stuff.

    According to Wiki, Goethe wrote:

“Yesterday’s opera was charming, and well executed, it was the Scuola de Gelosi, Music by Salieri, opera favourite of the public, and the public is right. There is an astonishing richness, variety, and everything is treated with a very delicate taste. My heart was moved by every tune, especially the finales and quintets which are admirable.”

  • John Borstlap says:

Salieri had the luck of having been appointed court composer, which provided him a safe place. In the competitive sphere of Vienna, filled to the brim with musicians and composers (many of them Italians), artistic (and otherwise) survival was not easy. Mozart never found a really strong foothold comparable with his talents, but he knew Salieri was a good composer and deserved his place. Alas there did not seem to be enough understanding of having 2 court composers at the time, and Salieri did not make the ‘mistake’ of putting ‘too many notes’ into his music, it is always ‘easy on the ear’.
