The great Cornish baritone died in July this year, aged 87. Friends and colleagues gathered this week at the Wigmore Hall to remember him.

Speakers include Dame Janet Baker, Sir Thomas Allen, Sir Bryn Terfel, David Willison, Petroc Trelawny and Sir Mark Elder, as well as recordings of Benjamin Luxon himself.

Heard him as Wozzeck in the early 1970s.You might think the part of much confused and put upon protagonist didn’t fit this giant of the stage. But of course it was the voice which was so extraordinary.
My wife also loves the Victorian duets with Robert Tear.Pure , tender pleasure after the tortured Wozzeck.Extraordinary again.
