A Mahler cycle in … Norwich
OrchestrasWe’re rather exicted to learn of a cycle of Mahler shymphonies being performed in Norwich, an English cathedral town of 144,000 souls.
They reach the fourth symphony at the King’s Centre next Saturday.
The initiator of the cycle is Norwich Philharmonic conductor Matthew Andrews.
Thank you for mentioning the Norwich Phil’s continuing Mahler cycle. Yes, we’re performing the 4th in Norwich on 7th December but in previous seasons we’ve already done the 1st, 2nd, 5th (with Matt’s predecessor Peter Britton), 8th and 9th. We played the 8th to an audience of over 1,800 as part of the Norfolk & Norwich Festival to celebrate our 175th anniversary in 2016, and a performance of the 3rd in the 2020 Festival was cancelled because of the pandemic.
So we have a few more to tick off and the lovely 4th is the next stop on our journey through the symphonies.
Formed in 1841, the Norwich Philharmonic Society is one of the oldest in the country and a focal point of a vibrant musical scene here in Norwich – http://www.norwichphil.org.uk.
The picture is of “St Peter Manscroft” in the main market square in Norwich. It is sometimes described as the greatest parish church in England: certainly it is as good as some cathedrals. They don’t play concerts there, but the do regularly perform the Evening Office (or Evensong) with a choir.
