Met tenor Michael Fabiano: I meant to go to business school
OperaThe US tenor, presently at the Met, talks about his unusual pathway to the limelight in the latest episode of Speaking Soundly with Met principal trumpet David Krauss.
‘When I got to college… my goal was to get an economics degree, heading for an MBA… Strategic plaining is like the gravy of my whole family… If I don’t achieve this success, what’s the matrix to exit the business?’
Listen here.
“Heading for an MBA” is not “went to business school.:
Oh, I don’t know: a Master of Business Administration isn’t available at Curtis or Juilliard, I’m told.
I used to work at the MET chorus, after which I studied law and passed the bar. Life is SO much better now, not having to spend time with musicians. Not to mention the pay.
Winners are grinners. Well done!!
Brilliant strategy.
Mr Fabiano did not attend Business School. Rather it was his intention to study business, but once enrolled at the University of Michigan, George Shirley opened his eyes to pursuing a career in music.
Fab, as his fans call him, just sustained an injury when he exited the Met stage after “Di quella pira” at a Saturday matinee; he tripped over something in the wings. He let out a scream and a moan that were audible throughout the House. He managed to finish the performance. The next evening he sang at the Richard Tucker Gala at Carnegie Hall, having been helped onto the stage by the pianist and moving very cautiously.
