Death of a US composer in Munich

RIP

The composer Laurence Traiger died suddenly on October 18. He was 68. Originally from Bellmore, Long Island, he had lived in Europe since 1976.

Traiger taught at the Munich Academy and the Innsbruck branch of the Salzburg Mozarteum. He worked closely with the Munich radio chorus and specialised unusually in writing for baroque instruments.

Comments

  • John Borstlap says:

Traiger wrote really good music. Why would any self-appointed music lover who is (supposedly) right in his mind, deem it necessary to place a thumb-down? maybe the only ‘professional musician’ who should not be on this site? In any case someone who has no ears.

R.I.P. The conservatory in Munich is housed in a building that was built as Hitler’s personal office building. It’s called the Führerbau. Imagine going to work there every day, and where the Dean was recently sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for the sexual assault of two colleagues in his office (which was Hitler’s office.) Suffice it to say Munich isn’t for everyone.

    • Hans says:

This comment is completely uncalled for and shows zero respect for the deceased.

Quite. I’m not sure if Mr Osborn has ever been to Munich. Perhaps he should go there and find out for himself. I’ve been told it’s a pretty nice town.

        • William Osborne says:

I lived there for 13 years and saw daily how Bavaria has been ruled by the far-right CSU for all but 3 years since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany. Such as Minister President Edmund Stoiber talking about the “dangers of a mongrelized society” in a city that has Dachau as a suburb. That sort of thing is daily fare in Bavaria and makes working in the Fuhrerbau even more weird. People survive by turning off their sensibilities. So I’m not particularly concerned about this or that Hans’ concerns about appropriateness. Talk about mongrelized people and working in the Fuhrerbau where the Dean raped (by the standards of current German law) women is OK, but “Hans” can be righteous about respect for the dead. That’s life in Munich.

There also a link there to a German version. Abbie story is iconic outside of Germany, but of course, inside Germany they see nothing. And that’s the real point, how do you get people to admit their chauvinism when they could commit even the Holocaust and then say they saw nothing. Yes, harsh words for a harsh reality now that the Nazi AfD is the second largest party in Germany and the Nazi Freedom Party the largest in Austria.

Thanks for your post Mr Osborn, bang on topic, as ever. I think you omitted RIP, probably just an oversight on your part.

For the record, the Hochschule in Munich as some good teachers. Here’s a link to one particular class:
