Anja Mittermüller was named First Prize winner last night the 2024 Wigmore Hall/Bollinger International Song Competition.

She’s 21. Just about old enough to accept a drink from the sponsor.

Comments

  • Anthony Sayer says:

Frighteningly young. Hope it all goes well for her.

  • Michaëla Karadjian-Schotte says:

What a ridiculous , denigrating, comment….i suppose you would say the same about a 21 year old tenor or bariton????

    • Eda says:

I agree with you. But, being a non English, English speaker, I can tell you that the use of the word ‘frighteningly’ made me laugh! I wish I could explain to you why!

    • Nik says:

Can you give us a list of all the 21-year-old tenors and baritones currently plying their trade on the international stage?

    • David Hughes says:

Madam, y o u r s is an utterly stupid reaction: there’s nothing remotely sexist with the reporter’s observation and had the object of his remarks indeed been a tenor or baritone it’s likely the same comment would have been made. You must be desperately looking to find fault where no fault lies. Your complaint says far more about you than the journalist you criticised, suggesting you’re an empty individual.

  • Maxim says:

    She is amazing!!!

  • Serious says:

The headline left me wondering who Bubbly Wigmore is. A Bond character perhaps ?

  • SVM says:

Here in the UK, the minimum age to drink alcohol legally (without the supervision and approval of a parent/guardian) is 18 years, so the expression “Just about old enough” strikes me as misleading. Or is the threshold in Austria higher?
