Rome books Netrebko
OperaThe Russian state agency Tass reports that Anna Netrebko will star in a new Tosca production in Rome on January 14.
The date and place are freighted with significance.
Tosca received its premiere on January 14, 1900 on the stage of the Costanzi Theatre in Rome. Netrebko appears to be established in some Italian minds as the regnant exponent of the role.
Opera houses are no longer obliged to book Netrebko with her divorcing husband Yusif Eyvazov.

Oh dear! What has happened to Saioa Hernandez who is still named on the Teatro dell Opera website?
… and why a 70-year-old Cavaradossi?
The news contains an error. Hernandez will sing on January 14, 16 and 18, Netrebko on March 1, 4 and 6 together with Eyvazov
I guess the win here is moving forward no one has to endure Yusif in order to hear Anna.
Estaban is working overtime for his client. In Europe, as long as she’s not taking Russian and Belarussian gigs, she likely will gain some traction, but the war will have to be well over before she comes back to the US, or Canada.
By the time that happens, Krakenthorp and the Old Countess will be her only rep.
Shame on the MET for blacklisting Netrebko.
They had no problem in inviting welcoming Karajan the former Nazi Party member.
It’s not a new production. It’s Alessandro Talevi’s reconstruction of that 1900 Rome staging – sets and costumes by Adolf Hohenstein (he of the famous Tosca premiere poster) – that has been knocking around for years.
That’s desperation- she’s way past it. Was no other soprano available at all? There are at least 30 sopranos in better voice- and that’s not counting those whose engagements at other companies have already been announced in advance.
