Hilary Hahn is unwell
OrchestrasThe US violinist has cancelled next month’s European tour with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and conductor Thierry Fischer.
She will be replaced by Roman Simovic, leader of the London Symphony Orchestra, in the Ginastera Concerto and Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie, and by Daniel Lazokovich in the third Saint-Saens concerto.
Wishing Hilary a swift recovery.

Lately, it has been taken up by quite a few fiddlers after being a bit out of favor for a while.

I’m kind of sick of people comparing two AMAZING musicians. Can’t we just enjoy the fact that there are still great artists in this world and we get to share in their life’s work?
This seems to be happening with her quite a bit these past few months. I hope it is nothing long-term! Wishing her fast recovery, she is one of the world’s greatest artists.

I’m saddened to hear she’s unwell. She’s an amazing musician, as well as having such a humble and generous personality.
HIlary Hahn played the Ginastera Violin Concerto in two excellent performances with the Utah Symphony in April 2022, led by then music director Thierry Fishcer.
It is possible that Thierry Fischer may release a Mahler symphony cycle, perhaps on Hyperion Records, with the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, where he is principal conductor/music director. I believe that there were initial plans to release a cycle on the orchestra’s own label.
The 1st, 2nd, & 3rd symphonies in the cycle have already been performed/recorded this year & last year. The 2nd received four public performances, the 3rd three performances, & the 1st also three performances.
He is Conducting 5 & 6 with the Utah symphony next season.
Indeed. Thierry Fischer conducted two performances of Mahler 6 with the Utah Symphony back on November 20-21, 2015, coupled with Haydn’s Symphony No. 6 “Morning.”
Fischer led two performances of Mahler 5 with the Utah Symphony on April 18-19, 2014, and two more on November 6-7, 2015. Andrew Norman’s percussion concerto “Switch” received its world premiere on November 6, during the first half of the concert, and that concerto was also played before Mahler 5 on November 7.
I attended all of these performances, in Abravanel Hall in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, and all of them were excellent to outstanding.
The fact that Fischer programmed another composition before each of these lengthy Mahler symphonies was a testament to how he challenged the orchestra and the musicians in an almost epic fashion during his tenure as music director of the Utah Symphony from 2009-2023.
Fischer, along with the musicians during his tenure, transformed the Utah Symphony into an orchestra that can perform at the highest levels week in and week out.
This is also likely Fischer’s plan for the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra.
He already has recorded the 1st and 8th with the Utah symphony
There was initially some thought given to recording a cycle of all of the Mahler symphonies on Reference Recordings with the Utah Symphony during the course of the two year Mahler Symphony cycle under then music director Thierry Fischer, but I believe that idea quickly moved by the wayside for a multiplicity of reasons.
The cycle was played during the course of two seasons: 2014-2015 had Nos. 1-4, and 2015-2016 had Nos. 5-9. Das Lied von der Erde was not performed.

Ok, well, it’s one thing to remove the comments speculating about her graying hair or about diseases, all of which were unnecessary. But it’s another to delete those who simply don’t care for her interpretation of the Ginastera, no?
From her X statement, she is not ‘unwell’, unless a pinched nerve is an illness.
