Death of a superb Violetta
RIPThe Italian soprano Elena Mauti Nunziata has died at the age of 77.
She made her name internationally in a 1977 Madrid La traviata that is still considered a benchmark.
She sang 26 times at the Met between 1977 and 1979.
Interview with Elena here.
Sometime around 1988 she gave the premiere of the kabuki-style Madama Butterfly that Lyric Opera of Chicago presented. Faboulous and when she and Suzuki and the child had their vigil for the arrival of Pinkerton I think there was not a dry eye.
Remember her great Violetta in Arena di Verona in 1979 with young debuting Alfredo of Peter Dvorsky at 25 and “young” Renato Bruson as Germont. She was alternating with Katia Ricciarelli & Francois Garner.
