They played this in December in Munich but it came across as slushy and trite in the wake of Haydn’s crisp Gypsy Trio and the brilliant, probing Shostakovich E-Minor Trio on the first half of the program, both of which, tightly performed, had kept us on the edge of our seats. Context matters.
This is one of the very greatest pieces in the entire chamber music canon- and what a performance! I can’t speak to the violin or cello parts, but I can assure my fellow SD readers [as if you couldn’t tell by watching] that the piano part is extremely difficult.
