Maestro moves, maestro stays
OrchestrasLatest leaps on the merry-go-round:
– Vasily Petrenko has signed on again as music director with the Royal Philharmonci Orcestra, taking him to 2030.
– Eva Ollikainen is stepping down as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of Iceland Symphony Orchestra in 2026.
– Jonathan Sells will replace John Eliot Gardiner at Leipzig’s Bachfest in June.
– The Festival Puccini at Torre del Lago has listed Pier Luigi Pizzi as ‘Artistic Director working with Conductor Jan Latham Koenig’.
– Christopher Lichtenstein is to be Generalmusikdirektor in Osnabrück
Isn’t Jan Latham Koenig supposed to be in jail?
I’m a big fan of V Petrenko’s recordings with RLPO.
So, Petrenko will be MD at both the Royal Philharmonic and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic?
These multiple posts are getting odd to me.
Petrenko is no longer chief conductor of the RLPO, hasn’t been since 2021 when he took up the RPO.
Petrenko stepped down from Liverpool 3 years ago. Domingo Hindoyan is the RLPO music director now.
For all the bad news about the Arts Council and all that, it seems to me that London is in the enviable position of having three top drawer conductors with their own orchestras: A. Pappano, E. Gardner and V. Petrenko. The news can’t be all bad in your neck of the woods.
