Maestros and their motor cars (19): Maria Callas’s Merc
UncategorizedThe diva bought 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 Limousine that same year in Paris from Royal Elysees on 48 avenue la grande armée. She sold it five years later, the Mercedes eventually turning up at a dealership in Vermont, USA. A local businessman bought it and he and Callas maintained a lively correspondence for some years afterwards.
Following Callas’ death in 1977, her estate contacted him, as the diva had expressed a wish that her latest Mercedes-Benz 600 only be sold to the same gentleman. Callas’ 1966 Mercedes, now back in Europe, was most recently sold in Monaco in 2015 to a private collector.
