The Society’s founder, Neva Pilgrim, has died after a long illness, aged 85.

Raised on a Minnesota farm, she sang as a soloist with numerous orchestras and released two-dozen recordings. She was artist-in-residence at Colgate University until last year.

Message from the Society for New Music:
It is with great shock and sadness that Carole and I write to let you know that our beloved leader and dear friend Neva Pilgrim passed last night. Her husband Dick and their son Jason were with her. We will post more information as it becomes available about arrangements for celebrating her life and legacy.
As Neva had been ill the last few months, we have been planning for the future of the organization. And we are doing what Neva wants us to do, which is to go forward and continue the Society’s work on behalf of new music in Central New York. Thanks to all of you for everything you have done to support Neva’s vision and her great work.
With love and gratitude –
Heather Buchman, Board President
and Carole Brzozowski, Managing Director

  • Richard Kessler says:

I knew Neva Pilgrim from the days when she was a board member at The American Music Center. Neva was a powerful advocate for composers and the field of new music, particularly at a time when it was performed much less and subject to a great deal of hostility. Neva did great work for the field of music. Rest in Peace, Neva Pilgrim

That’s a big name from the music world.

  • Mikell Miller DiGiorgio says:

Just a real shock, to hear of her loss. Neva was such a wonderful vocal teacher! My 8 years as her student, through High School and College, taught me so much more than simply “how to sing”, she truly taught me how to live. I was excited when my son Michael, chose to attend Colgate, I let Neva know he would be attending and she was able to place him with a vocal teacher, that helped him learn, that yes, his mother was right. I am saddened that I was unable to talk with her, one last time, before she passed. I know that she will be watching over all of us and waiting to hear the wonderful music, that will continue to showcased in her memory. Much love and condolences to her husband Dick and their sons Jonathan and Jason, and family.
