Birmingham Royal Ballet has chosen Paul Murphy as its new Music Director and Principal Conductor, leading the company’s orchestra, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

He replaces the Belgian Koen Kessels in July.

Murphy has been a member of Birmingham Royal Ballet since 1992, becoming Principal Conductor in 1997.

Carlos Acosta, Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet, said: ‘I couldn’t be happier for Paul. His unfailing energy and enthusiasm has been a source of inspiration to me, all of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia players, our dancers and the Company as a whole. While we are sad to see Koen leave, Paul is his natural successor and his appointment could not be more well deserved.’

Koen Kessels is Belgian and not Dutch.

  • Anthony Sayer says:

Say it quietly, but are we seeing ability being rewarded for a change?

  • Londonmuso says:

Fabulous news about Paul. Deserves it in spadefuls – excellent conductor, widely respected especially by the musicians which is rare.

  • Andrew Constantine says:

    Big congrats to Paul!

  • Bill says:

Very pleased to hear this! I’ve heard many of Murphy’s performances and he really is a good musician and a specialist in conducting for ballet! After all the recent appointments of idiots to leading positions this announcement is quite a relief!

  • Sue says:

Great news! They now have someone who really cares and will be present to serve the company.
