Casts at the Vienna Sate Opera are changing faster this month than the weather.

Pay attention, please, to Saturday night’s Fanciulla, the first of a run of nfour performances.

Carlos Álvarez had been scheduled for to sing the bad-guy Jack Rance. Around the time he cancelled all performances in two of three operas in the new „Il trittico“ in October, the name on the schedule changed to Wolfgang Koch.

A few weeks ago, it changed again, to Roberto Frontali.

Frontali cancelled on Saturday: Jack Rance was sung by Claudio Sgura (pic), who was driven in from Ferrara to Vienna and arrived at the Opera 50 minutes before curtain-up. He sang well, by all accounts, and looked good.

Meanwhile, Simone Young, who has conducted Feledermaus since the New Year, dropped out of Fanciulla, to be subbed by Carlo Rizzi who has never in a long career conducted at the Vienna Opera before.

    They don’t call Bratislava anymore?

  • Dominic Stafford says:

Rance is hard to sing. Like Scarpia, it goes up quickly. And down quickly too!

The “Vienna Sate Opera” ? They’ve had enough ?
