Organised pro-Palestinian demonstrators disrupted a performance today at La Scala, apparently a rehearsal for tonight’s performance.

The scheduled 8pm concert involved Daniel Harding conducting the Scala Orchestra and Chorus in Beethoven’s Fantasy in C minor Op. 80 for piano, soloists, chorus and orchestra, followed by Brahms’s second symphony.

UPDATE: A La Scala official writes: They targeted a rehearsal, when there is less control and less police in the house. They waited until the end and acted during the applause. They knew that interrupting the rehearsal would create negative feelings in the audience. They also showed Palestinian flags but shouted mixed messages against the operation in Gaza but also against “war” and “weapons”.

The only time the world care for killed Muslims, is when they are killed by Israelis. Apart from that, no one gives a flying f*ck.

Well, I believe they still don’t care about the dead, they just take the opportunity to bash out against the country they hate the most, Israel, and is the case for many of them, the people they hate the most, Jews.

    • Misinterpretation is unhelpful says:

I agree that the world needs to care more about other atrocities, such as in Yemen and Myanmar. But I don’t agree that the world just like to bash Israel or Jews. The Netanyahu’s government AND Hamas needs to look in the mirror about what they have done!!

  • Mick the Knife says:

They don’t have the right. Its BS.

  • A.L. says:

It is sort of interesting, not to say kind of amusing, that Palestinians have become the latest First World group/cause/fad used as a prop for virtue-signaling. Want to brag that you are “with it”? Want to let everyone who cares to listen know that you have checked the new box in the checkbox list? Easy.

    • Rob says:

Exactly—they treat each and every one of their causes as if they’re fashion accessories.

    • RPMS40 says:

Amusing? Really? It’s not a word that sits comfortably with current events however much your target is the ‘virtue-signallers’ as opposed to the Palestinians themselves, and whatever your views on the rights and wrongs of the Israeli and the Palestinian causes. There’s just nothing amusing at all about what’s happening. If some people are using it as a vehicle to virtue signal (not a term I would use) then it’s sickening rather than amusing, isn’t it? And if some people are voicing their concerns because they are horrified by the suffering then that’s their right, and it seems perfectly reasonable to exercise it.

      Amusing? Nope.

  • Michael says:

There is no room or reason for protesters to vandalise cultural events for their own, myopic ideological agendas. That said, “Stop bombing Gaza”, is not a pro-Palestinian position.

    • Tuberculosis says:

“Stop bombing Gaza” is actually deeply antisemitic.

      • May says:

Wow. Think about the inverse of your statement: “Keep bombing Gaza is pro-Jewish.”

How many Palestinians should die in your opinion? Because what you are actually saying is that to eradicate all Palestinians is pro-Jewish. Maybe that is what YOU personally want, however do not speak for others when giving voice to your cruelty.

“Stop bombing Gaza” means end the suffering to the Palestinian civilians who are NOT complicit in the Hamas attack. Violence will not solve the problem; it will only escalate the violence.

        • Ethan says:

Hamas hides behind civilians and uses them as shields. Hamas has its weapons hidden not in army bases, but under homes, schools, and near hospitals. The IDF has warned civilians to leave those places. Show me one country that asked civilians to evacuate before striking. This is urban warfare, and fighting takes place from one civilian building to another. Hamas, if it truly cared for its people, wouldn’t have launched its devastating attack against Israeli civilians in the first place.

    • Daniel Reiss says:

During applause at the end isn’t vandalism. Pro-Palestine is not pro-Hamas.

  • V.Lind says:

Gee — against war and weapons. The evil sods.

La Scala is a magnet for protesters against just about everything going on, from labour conditions to climate change, so I am not sure this merits any more attention than the space you gave it.

One year a decade or so ago there were anti-fascist protests, and pro-fascists got in there as well. Given what is going on these days, this was almost pro forma. And is sounds as if it was the politest possible protest.

  • IP says:

Google made it impossible for me to watch videos without ads, and now I get a mournful female every five minutes telling me all about Gaza.

  • George says:

Good for them. It won’t do a thing to halt the evil of Netanyahu’s ethnic cleansing campaign, but it keeps the issue out there for the public – and a very wealthy and perhaps influential public at that.

  • Bone says:

Wonder when they will protest at a rap concert?

  • H. Wynn says:

Did we worry and torture ourselves about civilian losses when we firebombed Dresden. Bombed Hamburg. Firebombed Tokyo. Dropped the A bomb twice in Japan. No. We were attacked and WE had the moral high ground, we felt. Israel was brutally attacked. Hamas’s stated aim is the destruction of Israel. If Hamas wanted peace, it could turn over the hostages and accept Israel’s right to exist. Really accept Israel. That would be a good start.

    • Georg says:

I hope I’m mistaken , but the net result of this bombardment won’t be any kind of resolution, just a continuation of the cycle of violence and resentment. If you treat people like the scum of the earth , there’s a possibility you’ll create monsters. An analogy which is applicable to both Hamas and many ( though not all ) Israeli administrations . Let’s hope for peace as I’ve seen some very wise people commenters from within Israel and Palestine.

  • Daniel Reiss says:

It looks like one man with a flag. (The disruption was at the Proms a few years back.) Or is anything that ruffles feathers “pro-terror”? Aren’t we sensitive!

  • Zandonai says:

I am sure these knucklehead protesters are winning a lot of hearts to their cause by intrrupting performing arts and blocking busy freeways during rush hour.
