An unsung Covent Garden pioneer has quietly passed away
RIPIn 1983, a music teacher called Pauline Tambling was appointed Education Officer at the Royal Opera House, the first of her kind. Over the next 14 years until the ROH closed for refurbishment, Pauline created programmes of learning and fun with schools and individuals across the c ountry. The model that she invented is now mandatory across the arts in Britain.
She went on to beecome Director of Education and Training at Arts Council England, fostering a £130 million Creative Partnerships scheme to connect young people with the arts. Later, she ran the National Skills Academy.
Pauline, who has died of cancer, was 68.
A very kind and gentle soul. Our visits to schools were among the highlights of my time at ROH.
