Orchestras

Those Kiwis who are not watching the cricket world cup will be stunned to find Anne-Sophie Mutter on their doorstep this weekend, playing selections from the music of Johann Sebastian Williams.

Attracting Mutter is a major coup for one of the orchestra world’s furthest outliers. Credit, then, to the NZSO’s new Kiwi music director Gemma New, whose connections run deep in the musical mainstream.

Mutter could be on a winning run here.

Johann Sebastian Williams? Shurely shome mishtake!

  • OSF says:

It’s New Zealand. Lovely place and they have a fine orchestra. Why not?

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

There’s something about the tone of this item which is sniffy and unbecoming. I hope she enjoys being in New Zealand, a wonderful country with the friendliest people.

And grammatical correction: “orchestral world” not “orchestra word”.

  • Money Talks says:

Wow. The NZSO PR machine has certainly won this round.

    The Emperor’s (Gemma) New Clothes.

  • Occasional Auckland Concertgoer says:

I went to the Auckland concert. Both Wellington and Auckland were sold out and everyone loved it. ASM was pretty happy with the audience reaction to the John Williams 2nd Violin concerto and was happy to inform the “Great Master” that the New Zealand premieres went very well.

My sources tell me that she very much enjoyed her week here which included a sold out master class, a sold out dress rehearsal and apparently some nature walks somewhere and that she is keen to return to see more of the country.
