What the trumpet asked the sax
Daily Comfort ZoneIn the latest episode of Speaking Soundly, David Krauss, principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera, gets together with Jess Gillam, forthright star of the supercool saxophone.
Jess, 25, is a seasoned performer. ‘At seven years old, I had to go to work with my Dad…’ she confides. Now she’s playing Carnegie Hall.
‘I’m trying to picture you holding a saxophone when you started out,’ says David. ‘It must have been a beast, like holding a radiator in your hand.’
‘You’re the most British person I’ve ever talked to, with your parents owning a teashoppe!’
Listen to their conversation right here.
I’m not a huge fan of the saxophone in classical music but after listening to this entertaining conversation- it peaked my interest and lo and behold…I love it.
Also not a huge fan of classical music PODCASTS but again, this one had me hooked.
Finally! A story about something positive
The Gillham’s ‘shoppe’ (sic)/cafe in Ulverston is an absolute delight – one of jewels in Cumbria’s crown. Do give it a visit.
“Why did you choose an instrument where your chances of employment are almost as bad as the euphonium?”
