German wins Chinese-dominated Paganini final
OrchestrasThe German-born violinist Simon Zhu was pronounced winner of the Premio Paganini in Genoa, worth 30,000 euros and a 70-concert tour.
Second was Jingzhi Zhang from China, 22 years old, 20,000 euro
Third prize went to Qingzhu Weng from China, 22 years old, 10,000 euros.
If I’d been born in China, would that make me Chinese?
Yes if you also grow up there. What else could you be if you speak mainly Chinese and every other languages with an accent. Like in this case Mr Zhu probably speaks with a German accent.
Even if I had English parents and grew up speaking English at home?

Simon Zhu, a former student of the Jury’s chairman Salvatore Accardo. Another one of those competitions…
Oh, not again….
Not to diminish Simon’s hard work and diligence, which should be praised. But unfortunately his being in the participation clouds both him and Accardo. According to Simon’s current biography, he is still studying at the Walter Stauffer Academy in Cremona with Accardo.
Simon Zhu studies at the Munich Hochschule with Ana Chumachenco, following studies in Berlin. He never studied full time with Accardo. Implying there was competition funny business just because he took a couple masterclasses with accardo is rather mean-spirited. Young violinists of his age do and should augment their main studies at conservatory with masterclasses with distinguished teachers and musicians.
He should modify his biography then
Unfortunately, this WAS the case here! It’s not “mean spirited”! I tell you what is mean to the competitors without this personal connections: not conducting a competition on a most possible fair way!! (This also inkludes judges that are professionals on this field! Not a violin dealer and a composer that never played violin..)

Everyone entering that competition has worked hard and diligently! It is just utterly inacceptable, that a competition of this format is not “clean”! The players are travelling there from all over the world and it is already made up in advance, who is going to win..
Another phony competition
You are not a horse if you are born in a stable as my Father used to say.
Sorry, I don’t get the meaning of your father’s expression. Could you please clarify? Thank you!

Everywhere you’re judged by your looks. If you look Asian it doesn’t matter where you were born you will be seen as Asian, same thing for Caucasians.
Bottom line- Asians are dominating classical music and opera. Soon we will be seeing a full Asian in the Vienna Phil.
Also the 2.nd prize winner is an active student of the jury chairman!
Again I ask the question: why this hang up with Nationality in classical music reporting (and not just here)? Why does it matter where a musician was born?
Norman – apparently third prizewinner Qingzhu Weng was forced to put on a suit jacket before the final round:

probably trying to irritate him to make some more mistakes for the benefit of jury chairmans students

Here one clearly sees, that both 1st & 2nd prize are students of Jury chairman:
