Montreal ties orchestra to conservatoire
OrchestrasThe Orchestre symphonique de Montréal has signed a partnership deal with the Conservatoire de musique et d’art dramatique du Québec by which orchestra musicians will work with selected students and play in the conservatoire orchestra. The details are sketchy but it sounds like a no-brainer.
Music director Rafael Payare said: ‘Music conservatories are vital: they provide training to tomorrow’s musical artists. Without them, music would not have a future, or its future would be severely compromised. My hope is that this partnership encourages us to build on past collaborations and stimulates innovative new ones. Music is essential for the heart and the mind, and its role in human wellness is fundamental. The fact that we can create by and through music is one of the miracles of life.’ Er, meaning?

Funnily enough, few OSM musicians teach at the Conservatoire – they’re concentrated at the universities (McGill and Université de Montréal).
There are seven conservatoires in different cities in the province of Quebec and I am sure they will all benefit from the OSM musicians expertise.
Payare is a down-to-earth guy who studied French intensively in order to come to Montreal and do press and social media in la belle langue. Contrast that with Dudamel the Divo who went to Paris where the administration and players were shocked to learn that Dudamel can’t even speak fluent English.
