The next Kaufmann sings in cafes

The US opera tenor Jonathan Tetelman gave Berlin cafe dwellers extra schlag on their capuccinos the other day when he popped up with Nessun Dorma, just like that.

Tetelman is being groomed as a potential successor to the faltering Jonas Kaufmann. That might be why someone was stalking the cafe with a professional video camera.

  • RW2013 says:

He (and all the other singers) deserve better than the new, scenically disastrous Il trittico at the Deutsche Oper.

  • Eros says:

This is in a wrong tonality, one and a half tone lower….

  • Dixie says:

Among the standing room fans in Vienna one used to say “blöd, blöder, Tenor” (dumb, dumber, tenor) … it would seem that NOTHING has changed!

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

You have them confused with the Loggionisti!!

      • Dixie says:

Get your geography straight! I did NOT confuse them with the Loggionisti, who populate the Scala di Milano NOT the Vienna State Opera! And do NOT even comtemplate whether I am a REAL person or not because, believe me, I am!!!

  • Willym says:

Sacrilege! Who puts schlag on cappuccino!

  • Andrew Powell says:

    Cinnamon and Sugar.

  • jung says:

    ll nome suo nessun saprà

  • Robert Workmon says:

Pleasant enough, I grant you, and made manageable by singing it a minor third lower than the original key.

  • Guest Conductor says:

Thumbs up! Alas, to have been there…

  • Jenny says:

Impress but not THAT great to be next Kaufmann and few will be!

    • John Kelly says:

I just heard him at his Met debut. Yes, he is comparable to Jonas though a different voice. Splendid volume, consistent sound throughout the range, genuine squillo too. Also a terrific actor and very very handsome according to my companion

  • Jay Sacca says:

Tetelman is a fine singer with, one truly hopes, a long and successful career ahead of him. Who can know the true story behind this clip? Well, obviously somebody does. Seems like a setup and pretty fake, and why the aria is in the wrong key who knows? If it were truly something spontaneous, it’s very possible the pianist just played it in whatever key he felt like. But the fact is none of the notes fall at the right place in the passaggio, let alone the high note, and it just sounds terribly wrong from the get-go lol.

  • Clive says:

Tetelman has enormous potential as an artist. Probably the most promising of his generation, far better than his English-Italian equivalent. This is a bit of social media fun. Nothing wrong with that. Complete non-story.

    • Phillip says:

The english-italian is far much better.

    • JML13 says:

The English-Italian is in a completely different league! When Tetelman can sing more than 40 seconds of this aria, never mind the entire role and transpose it up a minor third to the pitch Puccini intended, then and only then can you use this man’s name in the same sentence as Freddie

      • Clive says:

Lol. Tetelman has sung nessun dorma in the original key many times, including live with orchestra and on his Puccini album. I guarantee he’ll sing Calaf on stage even before Freddie’s burnt his voice out.

      • John Kelly says:

I just heard Tet at his Met debut. Sensational. If the English-Italian is this good then we are in for a golden age of tenors. OMG the squillo Tet has. Fabulous.

  • Norma says:

I saw and heard him in Perelada. I enjoyed it but did not get goose bumps He is the new Kaufmann in looks, his voice is also dark, so maybe he is the next Kaufmann and is learning Jonas’ marketing techniques , showing himself as close to people ( which Kaufmann no longer is, by the way); too much the unreachable star now, literally unreachable because he rarely turns up . Let`s hope Tetelman is more reliable.

  • AW says:

It’s just a bit of fun, no need to be so po-faced about it. If you look at the rest of of emilio.piano’s Instagram profile, that’s what he does: starts playing the piano in a public place and gets professional musicians to join in who pretend to just be normal members of the public.

  • John Kelly says:

He is singing in Rondine and as Pinky at the Met in the Spring. I reserve judgement until I hear him in the opera house. But I am optimistic. And anyway I get to hear Asmik as Butterfly so that’s worth twice the price of any ticket you buy.

  • EL says:

Tetelman is more of a look wise drooling point for ladies and gay guys, than drooling about his vocal qualities in a similiar category of Jose Cura, remember him?

  • em says:

the next Kaufmann means a duplicate of someone else, more of the same thing.. not really a big compliment.
when will we see a new tenor which is unique in his way like others, including Kaufmann ,were at their time?
