At Lincoln Center’s screening last night of the Bernstein biopic, Maestro, was Met music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin – ‘proudly representing @maestrofilm,’ in his words at the New York Film Festival.

Lenny was a stickler for turning out smart. Yannick prefers to show his undershirt.

To each his own.

  • Clem says:

SD’s obsession with YN-Z’s wardrobe is becoming far more interesting than YN-Z’s wardrobe. Any Freudians in the comment section who can enlighten us?

    • Tiredofitall says:

Well, good for YN-Z for sticking to his look. He never disappoints. Mr. Lebrecht is merely reporting. We can individually make our assessment as to whether this is a hit or a miss. I know I have.

Note: The french tips look FABULOUS with that outfit, but the pecs in that undershirt appear a little saggy and should be more prominent than the belly. Otherwise, zip up the jacket. Details matter in fashion.

    • Jim Lytle says:

Not a Freudian, but I would have appreciated salient info. What designer made the clothes? Who designed the jewelry? What company made the bag and shoes? That’s what I want to know when I review red-carpet looks. Oh, and something tells me that if LB was alive, he would work to make his fashion looks “au courant.” That’s who he was.

  • Emil says:

Representing the movie he worked on – not Leonard Bernstein. He didn’t play Bernstein, and it’s not Barbie where Margot Robbie ‘was’ her character on the press tour.

  • zayin says:

Good God, did he make that suit out of his bathroom rugs?

I know Bed Bath & Beyond had a big going-out-of-buisness sale in New York, but still…

    • Dan says:

      Absolutely
A conductor, shouldn’t he have class. One nice thing about Bernstein was his elegance in clothing
Why be prosaic, give style a shove?

  • Couperin says:

    Such an attention whore.

  • Leigh Yafa says:

Really, Mr. Lebrecht? The only comment that came to mind about this incredible maestro’s role in helping to bring authenticity to the portrayal of Leonard Bernstein in this film and the reason for his presence at this screening had to do with his clothing?

  • Midwest Branch says:

I think Lenny’s children represent Lenny just fine. YNZ can represent himself as he likes.

    • Hal Sacks says:

Jamie,Alex and Nina are totally on board with Bradley and Yannick, his conducting coach. Although uncredited.

  • Just sayin says:

That’s just Yannick being Yannick. You don’t have to like it, but he’s doing his thing, and something tells he couldn’t care less about SD reporting on him.

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

Got his pyjamas on!! Well, that’s OK too.

  • RW2013 says:

    Terrifying man-bag.

  • Willym says:

Some one should be having a serious talk with their therapist about this obsession with YNS’s wardrobe.

  • James Weiss says:

Why does he always insist on looking like an aging boy band wannabe from the 1990s?

  • Nova Pilbeam says:

    His wardrobe is so…tacky.

  • Fashionisto says:

Now you’re a stickler for fashion? When did this change from a music blog to a criticize anyone who doesn’t look or act like me blog?

  • JLE says:

And he seems to be carrying his toiletries bag too…

  • Mr. Ron says:

Who cares, except for his music, which is generally very good.

  • Michel Lemieux says:

Why aren’t we discussing YNS’s conducting or the Met’s casting (in which he has a significant voice)?

Who gives a shit about his odd sartorial choices?

  • Tiredofitall says:

Why has no one mentioned the verboten white after Labor Day in the US? Oh, right…he’s Canadian.

  • Despina says:

What YNS wears to see a film is not worth talking about. But his shenanigans in dressing up in ridiculous costumes when he conducts opera shows disrespect for the drama which is happening onstage. Its a childish play for attention, look at me me me me me. Great conductors don’t need these tricks to get attention.

    • Tiredofitall says:

Exactly. Well stated. “Great conductors don’t need these tricks to get attention.”

    • Nomeansno says:

Please. Get over yourself. Let people be who they are. This is a dying dinosaur of an art form. A little flash to make the event less stodgy does not belittle the art. Enough policing of how people look. Seriously….enough. Sheesh.
