We hear from sources at the Berlin State Opera that the Azeri tenor Yusif Eyvazov was given time off during Aida rehearsals to fly to Baku for his country’s military invasion and occupation of the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Eyvazov, 46, was recently appointed Director of the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. An outspoken nationalist he has hailed his country’s assaults on Armenians and refused, in the past, to share a stage with an Armenian singer.

He is married to the Putin-linked Russian soprano Anna Netrebko.

Eyvazov’s absence from the Berlin rehearsals was noted and resented by fellow-singers, who complained that Berlin should not be assisting the aggressor in an ugly post-Soviet conflict.

Why do you cover these miscreants and their antics?

    • LS says:

Because for some reason theaters think it’s good to hire a man who refuses to sing with people due to their nationality? In any case, it’s sort of crazy how much worse Mr. Netrebko is than Anna and yet nobody discusses how inexcusable his behavior is for an international artist.

  • Phillip says:

He is irrelevant, an awful singer. I cannot understand the reason he was in Berlin. He deserves oblivion.

    • Maximien says:

A new poduction of AIDA with him as Radames. Garanca and Rebeka as Amneris and Aida. – And I don’t like him and his ugly voice! 🙁

    • V.Lind says:

I had never heard him so decided to check out this comment, which is far from the first time I have heard Eyvazov so described. I only have You Tube samples to go on, but he seems no worse than a lot of his contemporaries. His politics are repulsive, but aside from a lack of richness those of us who grew up on Pavarotti came to expect I don’t find his voice significantly poorer than those of others we now accept.

  • Thomas says:

As some source from Berlin, may I ask when was he exactly absent and when the invasion happened. Are you sure of the information you are spreading?

  • High-Note says:

Hopefully they will give him a bow and arrow, and send him to the front-lines! Then we shall see just how patriotic he is.

    • Jonathan Sutherland says:

Actually Yusif the Useless’ voice is so metallic and strident, it could be used by the thuggish Azeri military as its latest secret weapon on the front line.
The poor Armenians would invariably retreat and run home rather than be subject to such excruciating aural torture,
