Press release:

Yuja Wang, the internationally acclaimed classical pianist, will take over London’s Lightroom for six intimate concerts, performing a repertoire of pieces inspired by her response to David Hockney’s artworks.

Lightroom is home to spectacular artist-led immersive experiences. David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away), Lightroom’s debut show, has attracted over 230,000 visitors since opening in February.

This concert series will afford audiences a unique opportunity to experience Yuja Wang performing in Lightroom’s awe-inspiring showspace, where David Hockney’s artworks will help provide an extraordinary and atmospheric backdrop to Yuja and her piano. Live camera on Lightroom’s walls will provide a unique perspective on her virtuosic performance.

Yuja Wang said: “As soon as I heard about Lightroom, I was immediately drawn to the possibility of fusing visuals with live music and creating immersive experiences. I’m particularly delighted to be working on this project with projections by the great David Hockney, who I’ve been a fan of for many years and the audience will experience his art alongside piano performance like never before – it’s exciting and definitely not to be missed!”

  • Peter San Diego says:

It will be interesting to learn which pieces she selects to go with the Hockneys. Ligeti etudes, perhaps?

  • Tony Sanderson says:

It’s good to see music and art combined. Composers such as Messaien, Scriabin and Rimsky-Korsakov had a condition called ‘Chromesthesia’, the ability to see sound as colour. The contemporary British composer, Deborah Pritchard also reports this.

In 2015, the pianist Cordelia Williams ran a Messiaen series in which she collaborated with the poet Michael Symmons and the artist Sophie Hacker.

May there be many more of these collaborations.

    A lot of childish stuff.
A pity to get that low.
