==playing out of her comfort zone
She recorded it many years ago for DG with Bernstein
Martha Argerich was one of the pianists when Leonard Bernstein recorded the work for Deutsche Grammophon.
It has been inside Her comfort zone for at least 46 years.
This is quite brilliant — the demonic-looking Dutoit undiminished in his powers and the Argentinian musicians outsinging and outplaying the English Bach Festival forces entrusted to Bernstein in 1977. But of course, The Wedding (Свадебка) is a brilliant work! Stravinsky at his defiant, pioneering best.
Many thanks for posting this. I was hoping you would, after that slightly untidy Beethoven Choral Fantasy the other day.
Yes, I agree that this was a very good performance. Took me a while to figure out that they were singing in French, though. (I knew right away it wasn’t Russian.)
And the mezzo was very much enjoying herself; I loved the smiles on her face.
Glad to see this performance, but Les Noces is not new for Argerich. She recorded it twice years ago with Bernstein and Dutoit.
She’s no stranger to this piece & the younger DG recording is star studded & conducted by Lenny.
Awesome at her age! Love this piece. Chuck’s no spring chicken either…
I’m assuming she hadn’t played it prior, though I’d never be surprised to hear otherwise.
Definitely not a work for the conductor to pull a “Mitch McConnell.”
How is Les Noces out of Argerich’s comfort zone? She’s recorded it at least twice.
She played on Bernstein´s DG recording in 1977, a starry cast with Zimmerman,Katsaris and Francesch.
Absolutely phenomenal! And the performance was led by the great Charles Dutoit, who, with his late colleague Pierre Boulez, is Stravinsky’s greatest conductor – by far! Check out his many Stravinsky recordings with Montreal.
Glorious Martha
Love this work.
Out of her comfort zone? Really? She recorded it with Bernstein in the 60s or 70s!
Not so out of her comfort zone—she’s played it on a number of occasions in the past, including at Lugano, and has made at least two recordings of it (with Bernstein and Dutoit)
Notwithstanding The Critic, Stravinsky, it seems, is not fading, when Martha is playing in her comfort zone.
How I wish she’s bring Ravel’s Left Hand Concerto into her comfort zone – I’d love to hear her play that.
