Italian police seize Alexander Pereira petty cash
NewsThe Austrian press are reporting that police in Florence have confiscated 126,483 euros from the former Maggio Musicale director Alexander Pereira.
Pereira, 75, is under investigation for using a Maggio credit card for non-Maggio expenses.
The veteran music manager resigned in February. The Maggio is presently being run by a civil servant.
I’m no fan of Pereira, but Meloni’s plan to replace all higher cultural officials with Italians is short-sighted. Cronyism and provincialism have deeply harmed Italy’s culture life for decades. They tried to open things up and modernize, and now she is setting everything back. The harm to Italian culture is a loss for the world.
Italian intendants could take cronyism lessons from foreign ones. According to the Italian newspaper “La Verità ”, in the Pereira papers a bank draft from a Lichtenstein charity was found, marked “Maggio Musicale Fiorentino sponsorship”, paying his home rental.
And Pereira’s landlord is a famous conductor…
Corrupt Italian? Who would have guessed
Pereira is Austrian.
Sorry, I should have said he seems to have successfully assimilated to the national culture.
I am sorry to see Alexander Pereira maligned. His contributions in Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich, Salzburg, Milan and Florence are unequaled. His artistic judgement, artist’s relations and managerial skill have contributed to a higher quality of performance than can be found in many major houses.
