Like Khrushchev, who famously asked the jury head in 1958 if Van Cliburn was “the best”- and if so, give him the gold- I’m sure Putin is doing the same here.

  • RW2013 says:

Rather like the 1980 Olympics in the same city.

  • Chaz Brewton says:

Apparently, Putin wants to make absolutely sure a Russian citizen is the winner, or at least second place in EVERY category. For EVERY foreigner, there’s a Russian contestant to off-set that person.

    • andy lim says:

or get a non-russian winner to pretend it to be a genuine “international” competition (korean-chinese participations) or one of the sanctoning western countries even

  • Dieter says:

Dies anybody know who actually went there and participated from other countries? Who would even want to???

  • Dmitri says:

There are several contestants with African heritage so it’s more diverse than it appears on the surface.

  • Zarathusa says:

The “fix” is in! Russians win all categories! Naz drove yuh! Too bad Putin has no musical talent; he could perform barechested!!!

  • Mr. Ron says:

Actually many Chinese (2) and a S. Korean plus an Italian in woodwinds.

  • history repeats itself says:

To be fair, there were f.e. many woodwind players from Russia, which is not surprising under these circumstances. Apart from that, the level of classical music in Russia is very high, you don’t need special circumstances for many entries from this country to go far. Sofia Viland in particular is a very capable musician, she was already in the final in the last competition with an international jury in 8th place; since then she has had many performances and will certainly not only get further because three of her colleagues are on the jury, which of course should not be the case, but again is due to the circumstances. One can now discuss whether the 2023 competition should take place at all (my opinion: no; the constant statements on the part of the organisation to emphasise common musical language, friendliness and internationality seems like a morbid Potemkin village), but to sweepingly suggest that every win by a Russian musician is not okay per se is also wrong.

Shame to all feeding gergiev&matsuev putin regime puppets.
