Midori inherits Ravinia from retiring Miriam Fried
OrchestrasThe Ravinia Festival has chosen the Japanese-American violinist Midori as artistic director of the Ravinia Steans Music Institute’s piano and strings program.
She replaces the Romanian-Israeli violinist Miriam Fried, who is stepping down after three decades.
These well known violinists are still described as Japanese-American and Romanian-Israeli – is this a boomer thing…..?
Perhaps for those who wish to have their ethnicity clearly noted. I’ve never referred to myself as a Swiss-American, but to each their own in cases such as this.
Since when is Miriam is Romanian?
Born in Satu Mare, Romania, but left for Israel at age 2. Pretty irrelevant info if you ask me.
Silly trolls aside, having an artist of Midori’s stature is wonderful for the future of Ravinia. Bravo!

Attach a nice and informative interview done some time ago by Bruce Duffie in Chicago with Midori. So, enjoy!
Miriam has been the greatest artist maker of her generation. She turns good players into true musicians. Anyone else worried that Midori is the wrong person for the job?
Miriam happens to be the mother of famed pianist Jonathan Biss.
Midori is stupendously conscientious, as is Miriam. Both possibly a little too much so for European tastes!
